In 1952, Dr. Norman Vincent Peale wrote in his book, The Power of Positive Thinking, “Change your thoughts and you change your world,” he was on to something. Thanks to modern day research, his assertion is scientifically validated in the expanding fields of Positive Psychology and Neuroscience.

A positive mindset is a powerful strategic advantage. While many of us have known this intuitively, the fields of positive psychology and neuroscience now provide robust, evidence-based research that proves its impact. One of my favorite TED Talks by Shawn Achor, The Happy Secret to Better Work, dives into this idea. A quick online search will lead you to this talk, where Achor discusses how cultivating a positive mindset enhances both productivity and overall satisfaction. He outlines five practical techniques to help “rewire” your brain toward positivity, which are invaluable for creating a happier and more effective work environment.

Achor acknowledges that some people are naturally more skeptical or tend to see the glass as half empty. Others might be naturally inclined to view life optimistically. But here’s the beauty of his findings: a positive mindset isn’t solely a trait we’re born with—it can be developed. Achor demonstrates that engaging in regular practices like exercise, meditation, acts of kindness, gratitude, and journaling can significantly boost positivity, even for those who tend to lean toward a more skeptical mindset.

As many people can attest, these simple practices—whether it’s taking a brisk walk, jotting down a few things you’re grateful for, or starting your day with a small act of kindness—can shift your perspective. They don’t just elevate mood; they can enhance focus, creativity, and solution-oriented thinking, especially when practiced before meetings or potentially difficult conversations. This is also supported by the work of Dr. Carol Dweck regarding a Growth Mindset.

Dr. Barbara Fredrickson at UNC and her work in the Positivity Lab, along with her book Positivity, offer additional insights and practical guidance regarding how positive emotions improve our wellbeing and resilience. Other influential figures in this field, like Martin Seligman, have expanded our understanding of how positivity influences our thinking patterns and relationships.

So, why does this matter for our work? When we approach meetings or tasks with a positive mindset, we’re positioning ourselves to be more creative, more focused, and more open to finding solutions. Building a positive mindset can truly transform our approach to challenges, turning setbacks into learning opportunities, and increasing our overall effectiveness and satisfaction.

Journal Prompts:

  1. Consider your typical mindset before starting a challenging task or meeting. How does it affect your performance and overall experience? Could you experiment with one of Achor’s techniques to see a shift?
  2. Reflect on an activity or habit that brings positivity to your day. What impact does it have on your mood and productivity? How might you incorporate it more consistently into your routine?
  3. What are some small acts of kindness or gratitude that you could practice daily? How could these simple actions reshape your perspective over time?
  4. Think about a challenging situation you’ve faced recently. How might a positive mindset have helped you navigate it differently, or what did you learn from it that could influence your approach in the future?

Taking time to reflect on these questions can help you embrace a more positive mindset and uncover new ways to integrate this powerful advantage into your daily life.
